THE FOUNDATION IS IN THE FINAL PHASE OF ITS OPERATIONS AND IS PRIMARILY WORKING WITH LONG STANDING GRANTEES AS PARTNERS IN CREATING LEGACY GIFTS TO DISTRIBUTE THE REMAINING ASSETS OF THE FOUNDATION IN ONE OF THE THREE FOCUS AREAS OF THE FOUNDATION. .
THE THREE FOCUS AREAS OF THE FOUNDATION ARE:
1) ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. Providing economic opportunity for San Diegans by the promotion, enhancement and support of the non-profit research and innovation cluster in San Diego.
2) CULTURAL OPPORTUNITY. Providing cultural opportunity for San Diegans through the support of collaborative activities of the Institutions in Balboa Park.
3) HEALTH, EDUCATION AND WELFARE OPPORTUNITY. Providing Health, Education and welfare opportunity for San Diegans in the Diamond Neighborhoods of San Diego through support of non-profit organizations that provide those services and are physically located in the Diamond.
The Foundation has identified the sustainability and growth of the non profit scientific research and innovation sector in San Diego (primarily at and near UCSD) as a major provider of economic opportunity for San Diegans. Funds are not granted to individual organizations but are provided for multi institutional projects and programs that benefit the cluster as a whole. This includes support of activities that educate the public about the work of the sector such as information concerning the ethical and policy implications of the research being done.
The Foundation believes that what the Balboa Park Institutions have, that no one else in the United States has, is their proximate location. This gives them the opportunity to examine any topic from a broad variety of intellectual perspectives in one location and to share resources and opportunities to maximize their impact. On this belief the Foundation supports only collaborative activity of the Institutions and organizations that are designed to serve the Institutions as a group or the Park as a whole.
HEALTH EDUCATION AND WELFARE
All Health, Education and welfare is provided through organizations that are physically located in the Diamond Area of San Diego. The Diamond area is defined to include Cholas View, Emerald Hills, Valencia Park and Lincoln Park. The emphasis is to build community capacity, over time, to build a vibrant successful community.
